What to look for in a tutoring program:

What ages do you tutor? Math Support specializes in helping students in mathematics from 5th grade through junior college- we provide enrichment for the gifted child, support and courses for students with learning differences (LD), supplemental instruction for ADD/ ADHDstudents, and of course support to students simply in need of clarification for their math course at school.

Is the tutoring one-on-one? Yes. One-on-one tutoring provides the maximum benefits by allowing the student ask questions at his or her own pace. Increasing their knowledge of subject matter without peer judjments will have a direct effect and build the student's self-esteem. If you are considering other providers, be sure to ask any service you are considering if the instructor will be sharing their time with any other students (one-to-one).

Where does the tutoring take place? We believe that students need to be in a supervised learning environment.  To date we do not send tutors to the home.  Our facility has a full library of math and science materials to be used in the tutoring process.  Students learn that it is not unusual to seek tutoring and will see others at all levels of the mathematical pyramid benefiting by attendance.

Can you tutor during school hours? Yes. We are available to tutor home-school and college students as early as 12:30 in the afternoon.

Do you offer subjects other than mathematics? Math Support tutors all math and science, study skills, and test prep (PSAT, SAT, High school entrance exam, DSTP, GRE). No other tutoring service specializes in these courses.

Is the tutoring just for remedial students? Individual tutoring is offered for remedial, enrichment, or maintenance needs. ALL studetns benifit by having individualized attention

Do you tutor college-level subjects? How about AP courses?
Yes, and yes. Math Support tutors every level, one-on-one. Honors courses taken for transferable credit are only available to students for remediation of a grade.

What kind of results can I expect? Our approach puts the classroom learning as top priority. Our initial testing will determine if prior weaknesses exist. Student need a solid understanding of the basics to be successful. Within the context of the course being taken at school our instructors will work with your child to build a firm background in the basics. With a clear understanding of what the student knows, we use present strengths plus an understanding of existing weaknesses to move the student twoards success. Studetns will be more confident when participating in class. Homework will become easier, students will learn how to approach homework to make it an effective learning tool. Our students report positive changes in their grade and their confidence almost immediately .

Guarantee: PLAN of ACTION We guarantee that you will see improvement of one full grade on your tests in your class at school after 6 weeks of instruction at Math Support. If improvement is less that one grade your child will be eligible to participate in one two-hour study hall per week at no additional charge for the next 4 weeks. To qualify for the guarantee Math Support requires a signed grade report from the teacher stating the percentage on the prior test and the overall percentage in the class.  After six weeks of instruction submit another progress report signed by the teacher stating the subsequent test grades and the overall percentage in the class. The teacher must also verify that all required homework was turned in for the period of instruction.

Do you offer summer school? Math Support has expanded operations during the summer months to meet the demand for preperation workshops and courses. Students may take a transferable course through Math Support and earn the grade and the credits! Students make-up credit during the summer in place of going to summer school. Many of the courses not offered at the public summer schools are offered by us. Unlike traditional summer school, our summer program is flexibility and allows families to take a one week vacation, work around a job or summer sports schedules. do not.

How about original credit? MSS is Accredited and approved with the William S. Hart School District to provide transferable courses for credit. Students do this to get ahead, or to catch up, with their credits. Courses are offered in small groups or one on one. The student is taught content, given quizzes, tests and homework, plus a final percentage grade. Transcripts are sent to the student’s home school.

What if my child or I feel the tutor is not the correct match? We make every effort to match each student and tutor; it is rare that a student and tutor would not work well together. If this occurs, however, or if you or your child has concerns, please call Math Support early on and speak with the Director or Assistant Director. We will be happy to change tutors.  We will not guarantee that your child will always have the same tutor, however, we will make every effort to accommodate your preferences.

Do you offer psycho-educational testing? No. But we can refer you to local professionals who can administer this testing.  This test battery includes I.Q., memory, visual-motor, and academic achievement level testing, as well as giftedness, learning disability, and attention deficit disorder screening.

Are there any fees before we actually begin tutoring?
No. Fees are not assessed until the actual tutoring session(s) have been set-up and confirmed. Math Support charges a small administrative fee for curriculum and enrollment each year. Timely registration can minimize this fee.
