Math Support Services 2010 Staff

Math Support Services is a private school specializing in tutoring for secondary mathematics. We also offer requisite course work not available through traditional school programs, an alternative to traditional school for students seeking college preparatory math and sciences classes, and a full SAT preparation program.

Math Support Services was the first Single Subject Mathematics School to be accredited by CITA and WASC. We are also certified by the California Department of Education as a provider for Supplemental Education Services, funded by NCLB legislation in the state of California.

Math Support began over fourteen years ago after founder Peggy Cannistraci felt inadequate trying to help her own children achieve in mathematics. She found that teaching them would end more times than not in frustration for both herself and her daughters.  This was in part due to the complexities of the parent/child relationship and in part to the difficulties as a parent knowing what is grade level appropriate.

Peggy then went back to school to attain her bachelors’ degree in mathematics, a master’s degree in mathematics curriculum for secondary education and a California clear credential.

She began supplementing mathematics instruction for students at the secondary level.  What started with a few students multiplied exponentially, resulting in many thousands of students receiving instruction over the years at the Math Support Services facility.

Peggy's vision is to add to what our public schools offer.  She proposed offering courses for credit over the summer; courses that were not available through the district.  She then founded a single subject private school offering courses such as Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus and Calculus. Courses now include Chemistry and Physics. Math Support achieved accredited status and is recognized by the William S. Hart High School District in the Santa Clarita Valley. In addition to tutorial services, students take courses for credit and attend SAT, PSAT & ACT preparation courses.

Mathematics has the ability to set GATE and high-achieving students on a course of high achievement.  Peggy believes that, no matter what the level of the student, private instruction is a great asset.  Even students functioning above grade level have frustrations trying to learn difficult concepts.  Many GATE and high-achieving students take their schoolwork more seriously and the results of their efforts, namely grades, have a direct affect on their self-esteem.

Instructors at Math Support provide participants with individualized planned instruction, including academic skills improvement through review, skills instruction based on current class assignments, previewing upcoming class material, enrichment activities to stimulate decision-making/application process, learning study strategies related to specific course content, all in an atmosphere where participants are not subjected to peer evaluation.
